Tool Steel

Tool steel is a type of carbon steel known for its distinctive hardness and a carbon content between 0.5-1.5%. There are four major alloying elements in tool steel: chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, and vanadium. It’s the present of carbides in tool steel that creates its dominant qualities.

As its name implies, tool steel is most commonly used to make machine parts, forging dies, and tools including blades, chisels, cutters, drills, filers, hammers, and reamers. Tool steel is extremely hard, highly resistant to abrasion, and maintains a sharp cutting edge even at high temperatures. Essentially, tool steels are used to coin, cut, extrude, and press other metals.
